Darlene Anne Dougherty

Long time Kemmerer resident, Darlene Anne Dougherty (79), passed away in Kemmerer on December 23, 2019, after a long illness.  Darlene was the first member of her Italian immigrant family to graduate from college.  After graduating from the University of Wyoming, Darlene taught English in Kemmerer for 38 years.  In her retirement, Darlene became the family matriarch keeping her family close to their Italian roots.  It was expressed by her love of the traditions including family, food and language.  Darlene was present at all possible family celebrations and took great pleasure in relating the immigrant family history to the ever-growing members of the Bedont lineage. Darlene was a good friend to many and an active member of the Catholic community.

Darlene was preceded in death by her grandparents, Antonio and Luigia Bedont, her mother, Lena Carr, and father, John Esman, her aunts, Cesarina, and Victorina, and her uncle, Attilio Bedont.  Darlene’s beloved daughter and only child, Angela Dougherty, a Wyoming attorney, died on September 13, 2019.  Darlene and Angela were devoted to one another.  They traveled extensively together including fulfilling the dream of a once in a life time trip to Italy.  In her later years Angela lovingly cared for her mother, Darlene, in Gillette and Cheyenne, Wyoming.

She is survived by her sister, Roberta Johnson of South Salt Lake, a niece and nephews, and five cousins and their children and grandchildren.

Darlene’s extended family would like to thank the caretakers at the South Lincoln Nursing Center for their compassionate care during her brief stay with them as well as the many friends in Kemmerer whose visits were a comfort and a blessing.  Everyone’s kindness is a beautiful reflection of Darlene’s love for her hometown of Kemmerer.

The Rosary will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Kemmerer at 10:00 AM Wednesday January 8, 2020 followed by the Funeral Mass and internment at the Kemmerer Cemetery. Immediately afterward a luncheon reception will take place in the Family Hall at St. Patrick’s.

Memorial donations in Darlene’s name may be made to the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 65 McGovern Avenue, Kemmerer, WY 83101.
